Leather grading runs on ISO 28499-3 and FAO/UNIDO rubrics - but in practice a human eyeballs scratch, cockle, holes, brands and putrefaction, then calls a grade 1-4 or "reject." Two graders disagree. The same grader drifts across a shift. On a commodity sold by area and grade, every one-tier slip is margin walking out the gate.
A peer-reviewed tannery audit of 6,530 hides found scratch driving 20.5% of downgrades and knife/flaying cuts 21.1%. A second study across eight tanneries found not one hide free of defects - cockle alone pushing two-thirds of hides to low grade. On fabric, a unit cut 200 pieces from a roll with hidden shade bands before anyone noticed: NPR 180,000 gone on fabric, cutting labour and a three-day slip.
