A CNC job shop runs on gut feel: the owner finds out about a stopped machine at seven in the evening, from a register filled in from memory. We put a sensor node on every machine — even the 20-year-old ones — and the truth on one screen.

The situation · As found

Blind between 6am and the evening register.

A typical job shop in Peenya runs ten to twenty machines across two shifts. Ask the owner which machine made money yesterday and the honest answer is a guess.

Utilization lives in a notebook, filled in at the end of the shift, from memory. Stoppages get rounded down. Idle hours disappear. The machines that look busy and the machines that are busy are not the same list — and quoting, scheduling and hiring all run on the wrong one.

The monitoring products that exist assume a new machine with a modern controller and a factory IT team. A Peenya floor has a 2004 lathe, a retrofitted VMC, no two controllers alike and a Jio hotspot for internet. So nothing gets monitored at all.

    A small node clamps onto the machine's power line or taps the stack light. No controller integration, no modification to the machine. If it was installed in 2004, we can still read it.

    See

    Running, idle, off — live, for every machine, on one screen. Green means cutting. Amber means waiting. Grey means off. No interpretation needed.

  • S-03

    Tap

    When a machine stops, the operator taps a reason — no material, tool change, no operator. Reject counts work the same way. One tap, at the machine, while it's fresh.

  • S-04

    Buffer

    Offline-first. The node stores readings locally and syncs when the network comes back. A power cut or a dropped hotspot never loses a minute of data.

  • S-05

    Read

    The dashboard is built for a cheap Android over Jio, not a control-room wall. Big numbers, fast load, readable at arm's length in workshop light.
